Prek Toal Core Bird Reserve is a sanctuary that hosts one of the most important colonies of waterbirds in Southeast Asia. About 150 species of birds have been recorded in the reserve, seven of which possessing a global significance because of their endangered status: spot billed pelican, painted stork, lesser adjutant, greater adjutant, milky stork and oriental darter.
This area is protected as part of the Tonlé Sap UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and covers roughly 31,000 hectares.
A floating village of the same name is the staging post to enter it. You can discover its stilt homes, shops and fish farms.
The best time of year to go the village and then to the reserve is during the dry season, from December to May, since the birds congregate at Prek Toal at that time.
